DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke field hockey team will begin the 2021 campaign ranked 12th by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The coaches association released its preseason poll Tuesday in advance of the beginning of the 2021 schedule this weekend.
North Carolina sits atop the poll with 1123 points and 43 of the first-place votes. Michigan came it at No. 2, while Iowa, Northwestern and Louisville round out the top five. All six ACC programs are ranked in the top 12 as Duke is set to face 13 of the preseason top 25.
The Blue Devils return four of their top five scorers from a year ago and welcome back all but two players from the 2020-21 season. Senior
Leah Crouse recently was named to the Preseason All-ACC squad, while
Hannah Miller looks to build on her 12-point sophomore season.
In addition to the three Blue Devils seniors from last season who returned for their fifth season due to COVID-19, the duo of
Grace Brightbill and
MaryKate Neff joined the Duke family a graduate student transfers from Princeton University. Neff will bolster the midfield, while Brightbill will help man the cage.
Duke will face an immediate test in its season opener, taking on No. 15 Rutgers this Friday, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m., at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. Admission is free.
