Richard Brereton has signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Cubs to take the next step in his career.
Brereton inked a contract following the 2021 MLB Draft, where five Blue Devils were selected to tie the third most selections in program history. Brereton joins Duke teammate
Peter Matt as a rookie in the Cubs organization as he was taken in the 10th round.
The Darien, Conn., native concluded his career at Duke in the 2021 season after playing at Emory form 2017-20. He carried a 3.51 ERA and a 14-5 record in 48 games with 24 starts. He totaled 156 strikeouts in 169 innings of work. A two-way player, Brereton batted .349 in 113 games offensively with 126 hits, 25 doubles, five triples, three home runs and 67 RBIs while at Emory.
In his lone season as a Blue Devil, Brereton put together a 7.02 ERA and a 1-0 record in 12 appearances and two starts. He allowed 13 runs on 23 hits and 10 walks while striking out 25 batters in 16.2 innings pitched.
