DURHAM, N.C. – After a historic season for Duke track & field, in which he was named the 2021 USTFCCCA Southeast Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year,
Mark Mueller has been promoted to Associate Head Coach.
"Mark has become one of the best sprint coaches in the country and his craftsmanship has shown to be instrumental to our programs success," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Shawn Wilbourn. "We work very well together, and I trust his opinion on matters that pertain to our sport. His promotion is well deserved."Â
Duke sprinters have risen to new heights under Mueller, culminated by an extremely successful 2020-21 campaign. His work with graduate student
Brittany Aveni was a headliner, with Aveni becoming the first five-time All-American in Duke women's track & field history and the first Blue Devil in outdoor program history to qualify for three NCAA Outdoor events in one season. Aveni broke the school records in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m and 4x400m this season.
"I want to thank
Shawn Wilbourn,
Nina King,
Troy Austin and
Meeghan Ford for this new opportunity and responsibility to help build on the success of this historic season and take the Duke Track & Field program to new heights," said Mueller. "I came to Duke seven years ago for graduate school and to coach and I fell in love with Duke, its mission and its student-athletes.  It has already been an incredibly rewarding adventure and I am thrilled to continue to be part of this one-of-a-kind institution."
Mueller's sprinters played a critical role in the women's program winning the 2021 ACC Outdoor Championship, accounting for 52 of the team's 110 points. The 400m unit proved to be one of the best in the country, as Aveni,
Iman Sule and
Elena Brown-Soler and
Jenna Crean and
Carly King took first, second, fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively, in the event at the ACC Outdoor Championship, while the 4x400m relay secured the Blue Devil win on the final race with a program record.
His work extended into Olympic action as well, as Mueller helped guide former Blue Devil and current volunteer assistant coach
Maddy Price, who was recently named to Canada's 4x400m relay team for the upcoming Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan. Price became the first female sprinter to qualify for the Olympic Games in program history.
