DURHAM – Freshman southpaw
Luke Fox was named a Second Team Freshman All-American by
D1Baseball, the publication announced on Monday.
Â
Fox was stellar for the Blue Devils in his rookie campaign, beginning his season as a reliever with a few staff day starts. After an injury plagued the Duke weekend rotation, Fox stepped up to fill the void and started in his final five appearances of the season.
Â
The Waukesha, Wisc., native finished the season with a 3.05 ERA in 56.0 innings pitched. He allowed a mere 19 earned runs on 59 hits and 15 walks while boasting a team-leading 76 strikeouts in 20 appearances and nine starts. Among ACC pitchers that threw at least one inning per game, Fox tied with teammate
Marcus Johnson for third in the league in ERA. His 15 walks allowed were the fifth fewest in the conference. In addition, Fox recorded 12.21 strikeouts per nine innings to rank fifth in the ACC and sixth in program history.
Â
The young arm shined in the ACC Baseball Championships, allowing just two runs while striking out seven in seven innings of work in the tournament semifinals against Virginia. His performance led Duke to the tournament championship for the first time in program history.
Â
Fox recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts while allowing one run on five hits and a walk in 5.2 innings pitched against Virginia Tech on May 22. The rookie kept the Hokie offense at bay, setting up an exciting walk-off single by
Erikson Nichols to capture the series sweep.
Â
In addition to his successes on the field, Fox excelled in the classroom. He was one of seven Blue Devils named to the All-ACC Academic Team.
Â
Despite student-athletes being granted eligibility relief due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
D1Baseball considered only true freshmen for the teams.
Fox joins
Ethan Murray (2019) as the only Blue Devils in program history to earn Freshman All-America honors from
D1Baseball.
