KNOXVILLE, TENN. – Duke blasted a season-high six home runs to power past Wright State, 14-6, in an elimination game of the Knoxville Regional at Lindsey Nelson Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Â
Junior
RJ Schreck enjoyed a monster day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with three home runs and a double. His three home runs are a career-high and the most by a Blue Devil since Evan Dougherty did so against Ohio State on Feb. 26, 2016.
Â
Freshman
Luke Fox started on the bump for the Blue Devils, allowing just four runs, three earned, in four innings of work. The southpaw gave up six hits and two walks while striking out six.
Â
The Blue Devils started strong, utilizing home runs to jump out in front. Schreck hit a two-run home run in the first to give Duke a 2-0 lead. Wright State responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning before tying the game 2-2 in the bottom of the second.
Â
Duke added four more in the third inning, both on two-run home runs. Schreck struck first, sending a two-run shot over the right field wall before senior
Chris Crabtree hit another two-run homer just three batters later to take a 6-2 lead. Wright State would respond again, scoring another in the third.
Â
Each team scored one in the fourth, but Duke put the game out of hand in the fifth as the Blue Devils plated six runs on three homers. Graduate student
Erikson Nichols and junior
Ethan Murray each hit two-run shots to left field to start the trio of long balls before Schreck recorded his third of the day with a solo bomb to right center.
Â
Wright State threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out. The Raiders' Tyler Black stepped up to the plate and scorched a ball to left field, but a stellar catch on a well-timed jump allowed Schreck to rob the grand slam. The runner on third tagged up to score, but a strikeout in the next at-bat ended the inning.
Â
Duke added another in the top of the eighth, prospering off Wright State's fourth error of the game and extended its lead to 14-5. The Raiders added another run in the eighth to make it 14-6.
Â
Redshirt sophomore
Jimmy Loper earned the win in relief, improving to 3-1 on the season. The Chesapeake, Va., native allowed just one run on three hits and three walks while fanning three.
Â
The Blue Devils will play the loser of Liberty and Tennessee at 2 p.m., on Sunday. The winner of Duke's game at 2 p.m. will then play again at 6 p.m. against the lone 2-0 team of the regional, looking to force a winner-take-all game at 1 p.m. on Monday.
