EUGENE, Ore. – In a busy day of action for Duke track & field at the U.S. Olympic Trials, senior
Erin Marsh led the way, completing day one of the heptathlon and sitting in ninth place after the first four events at Hayward Field.Â
Â
Marsh got off to a quick start in the 100m hurdles, earning 1,111 points with a wind-assisted time of 13.09 seconds. While not an official time for record purposes, it is the fastest wind-assisted mark of her track & field career and gave her sixth place overall at the conclusion on the opening event.
Â
The Buford, Ga., native kept up the strong run of play with an eighth place showing in the high jump. Marsh recorded her second highest mark of the season at 1.78m (5-10 feet), just 0.01m shy of a personal best to add 953 points to her total and keep her in sixth place at 2,604 points.
Â
While Marsh slipped to 10th after taking 17th in the shot put, she bounced back with another fast time in the 200m. Marsh ran a time of 23.93 seconds, taking sixth in the event and moving into ninth place after notching 943 points. Marsh sits at 3,637 points after day one, ranking as the second-best collegian in the field, behind only Miami's Michelle Atherley.
Â
In the only final of the day, 2016 Duke graduate
Megan Clark completed play in the pole vault taking 10th overall. Clark matched her performance from qualifying, clearing a height of 4.50m (14-19 feet) on her third attempt. It marked her second straight top-10 performance at Olympic Trials after taking fifth in 2016.
Â
The night ended with senior
Lauren Hoffman competing in the 400m hurdles. The Haymarket, Va., native turned in yet another sub-58 seconds time, this time clocking in at 57.59 seconds. The mark improved her qualifying run by 0.29 seconds, but was not enough to advance to Sunday's final, as Hoffman took home sixth in her heat and 11th overall. Hoffman finished third among all collegians, with only NCAA Champion Anna Cockrell of USC advancing to the final.
Â
Marsh will conclude action for the Blue Devils on Sunday, beginning at 4 p.m. ET, with the long jump, javelin and 800m still remaining.
