Dan Colella announced the signing of transfer
Brad Sanford on Friday.

Sanford competed two seasons at Michigan State before transferring to join the Duke Blue Devils. He currently ranks fifth all-time at Michigan State in the 100 butterfly (47.58) and sixth all-time in the 50 freestyle (20.28). His 20.63 50 butterfly split was also the second fastest in school history.

"The world class academic and athletic experience was too hard to pass up," Sanford said. "The coaching staff is extremely helpful, and their training philosophies match well with mine. The team atmosphere is awesome, and it is a great group of guys."

During his time as a Spartan, Sanford competed at the Big Ten Championships both seasons, reaching the finals of the 100 butterfly with a career-best time of 47.58. He also competed in the 100 freestyle while being a member of the 200 and 400 medley relays, as well as the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

The native of Naperville, Ill., also excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore in 2021.

Prior to Michigan State, Sanford was a high school state qualifier in Illinois and broke the Naperville Central school record in the medley relay.

Sanford is the son of Doug and Rebecca Sanford. He has three siblings, Jessica, Ashley and Ryan.
