DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis program is set to add another new face, as the team welcomes
Eliza Omirou as a graduate transfer for the 2021-22 season. Omirou joins the program after spending four seasons at fellow ACC program Wake Forest.
"We are extremely excited that Eliza has decided to continue both her education and her tennis career here at Duke this coming year," said head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "We have had the opportunity to see her across the net quite a bit over her time at Wake Forest and know that she is not only a great competitor, but a great team person. Having played in this conference, she knows what it takes to be successful day in and day out and she has shown that she has the qualities it takes to be successful. We are looking forward to getting on the court with her and having her start her Duke career."
A native of Nicosia, Cyprus, Omirou attended the English School in Nicosia before joining Wake Forest. One of the best players to come from her home nation, Omirou was named the nation's best female player by the Cyprus Olympic Committee in 2014 and 2015 and became the youngest to make the Cyprus National Team at age 14.
"I am extremely excited to join the Duke women's tennis program and become part of the Blue Devil family," said Omirou. "This tennis program was one I always admired because of the hard work and class they demonstrate on court. I am grateful for the opportunity to play for one of the best tennis teams in the country and compete alongside talented and hardworking teammates. I am also looking forward to being coached by Jamie and Michelle, whose knowledge and experience can advance my game to the next level. I can't wait to give my 110% to the Duke women's tennis program and help my team achieve even greater things!"
This past season, Omirou recorded a 10-9 overall mark and 6-7 record in conference play in singles, splitting time between the No. 3, 4 and 5 positions. In doubles, Omirou combined to form Wake Forest's No. 1 team with Carolyn Campana, going 9-5 overall and 2-4 against ranked opponents. Omirou capped off the season by helping Wake Forest reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament, earning a singles win against Furman as part of a 4-2 victory in the opening round.
In the 2021 NCAA Doubles Championship, Omirou earned a win against her future teammate, playing with Campana and defeating
Margaryta Bilokin/
Meible Chi, 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (4) en route to a finish in the round of 16. Omirou has been a part of several dynamic duos over her collegiate career, reaching a high of No. 9 in the nation in 2019 with partner MC Meredith and being named a 2020 ITA All-America.
Omirou has been a model student-athlete over the last four seasons, being named to two ITA All-Academic teams and the 2017-18 All-ACC Academic Team, while compiling 136 combined singles and doubles victories and being named ACC Freshman of the Week twice.
