LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Junior
Jack Carey put in seven stellar innings of work on the mound and the Duke baseball team blasted five home runs on its way to a 13-3 win over No. 15 Louisville at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville.
The Blue Devils outhit the Cardinals 16-8 in the contest, highlighted by graduate student
Peter Matt's 4-for-5 day. Matt recorded a career-high six RBIs on two home runs and a double. Junior
RJ Schreck also excelled in the batter's box, finishing 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs and two walks. Graduate student
Erikson Nichols also finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Carey put together a gem on the bump for Duke as the Summit, N.J., native allowed just one run on four hits and two walks in a career-high seven innings pitched. Carey also struck out five while on the hill.
Duke (20-18, 10-15 ACC) wasted no time to take an early lead. Junior
Ethan Murray singled to right field and Schreck reached base on a four-pitch walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. In stepped Matt who drove a ball over the wall in left field to give Duke a 3-0 lead before an out was recorded.
Louisville (24-15, 14-10 ACC) cut into its deficit in the bottom of the third, stringing together a single and a double to score one, 3-1.
The Blue Devils added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore
Graham Pauley blasted a ball over the right field wall to lead off the inning before Schreck hit a two-run blast to right center to give Duke a 6-1 lead.
Another three-run home run from Matt and a two-RBI double from Nichols in the seventh added five more runs to Duke's tally, increasing the lead to 11-1. Schreck hit a solo shot in the eighth to stack on another run, 12-1.
Louisville added runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth. Duke's final score of the contest came as Nichols drove in senior
Joey Loperfido with a single to center field.
Sophomore
Jimmy Loper closed the game for Duke, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two in two innings.
Duke and Louisville will return to the diamond for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Saturday. Originally scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m., game three of the series will be played 45 minutes after game two on Saturday due to expected inclement weather entering the area.
Postgame Notes:
- Duke continued to use the long ball, tallying five home runs and have hit 17 home runs in its last five games.
- Murray extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
- Matt hit a home run in his third consecutive game and hit two home runs in consecutive games for the first time of his career.
- Pauley recorded his second career home run. The bomb was also his second career hit in ACC play, both of which are home runs. Pauley's three hits on the day are a career high.
- Schreck recorded his sixth-consecutive multi-hit game.
