CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senior
Michael Rothenberg blasted a walk-off home run to left field to power ninth-seeded Duke into the semifinals of 2021 ACC Baseball Championship.
His longball wrapped up the perfect Blue Devil comeback as the designated home team in the game turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory over fourth-seeded Miami on Thursday afternoon in pool play at Truist Field.
The Boca Raton, Fla., native brought home all three Duke (30-20) runs in the game as he finished the contest 2-for-4, including the game-winning hit. He also earned a two RBI single in the seventh frame to knot the score at 2-2. Miami (32-18) placed numerous runners on base throughout the game, but the Blue Devils were able to work out of jams to stranded 11 Hurricane baserunners, including four in the last two innings.
Junior
Jack Carey started on the mound for Duke and recorded another quality start, finishing his day allowing just two runs, one earned, four hits and one walk in six innings of work. The righty fanned a game high eight batters during his time on the hill as well.
Thursday's battle turned into a pitchers duel early as both teams saw their starting pitchers only give up two hits in the first five frames. Miami threatened in the third inning, loading the bases with two outs, but Carey worked out of the jam with a strikeout.
The Hurricanes jumped on the board first, plating two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Duke responded in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Rothenberg's two RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. His hit brought home junior
RJ Schreck and graduate student
Peter Matt who had singled and doubled, respectively, to lead off the inning.
Neither team was able to break the deadlock until the bottom of the ninth when Rothenberg stepped into the batter's box with one out. Miami southpaw Carson Palmquist, a first team All-ACC relief pitcher, was ahead in the count at 1-2 but Rothenberg turned on the next pitch and blasted a shot over the left field wall to win it for the Blue Devils.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher
Marcus Johnson earned his fifth win of the season as he continued Duke's strong pitching in the game after taking over in relief of Carey. Johnson gave up two hits and three walks but struck out three in three scoreless innings of work.
Duke advances to the semifinal of the 2021 ACC Baseball Championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils will face the winner of Pool A, which will be either Notre Dame or Virginia. That contest will be decided on Friday at approx. 3 p.m. Duke's semifinal game on Saturday will be broadcast on ACC Network.
