CLEMSON, S.C. – The Duke rowing team finished first in the Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight heats to highlight the opening day of the ACC Championship in Clemson, S.C., on Lake Hartwell.
Each of Duke's five boats advanced to its respective Grand Final on Saturday, beginning with the 3V8 at 8:15 a.m.
The 3V8 gave the Blue Devils a strong start on Friday morning, outpacing Syracuse, Miami and North Carolina with a 2-kilometer time of 6:58.277. The V8 crew followed with another victory, clocking a time of 6:35. 016 to narrowly beat out the Orange at 6:35.974.
Duke's 2V8 boat finished second behind top-seeded Virginia with a time of 6:46.199. While the Blue Devils were not able to catch the Cavaliers in the closing stretch, they managed to finish over 11 seconds ahead of third-place Notre Dame (6:57.215).
The Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four each placed second in Duke's final races of the morning. The V4 squad held pace with Virginia through the first 1,000 meters, but the Cavaliers pulled away late as the Blue Devils came in at 7:36.183. The 2V4 heat proved similar, as Duke was three seconds off Syracuse at the 1,500-meter mark. The Blue Devils finished with a time of 7:39.554, while the Orange closed out strong by clocking 7:32.654.
The 2V4 is slated to go second in Duke's order of events on Saturday, lining up at 8:40 a.m. Following will be the V4, which looks to defend its 2019 gold medal at 9:05 a.m. The 2V8 is set for a 9:30 a.m. start, before the V8 closes out the weekend at 9:55 a.m.

Virginia earned five wins in Friday's heats, while Syracuse registered first-place finishes in the 2V8, V4 and 2V4.
