CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Redshirt senior
Ben Beatty kicked off competition for Duke track & field at the Virginia Invitational on Friday afternoon, finishing fifth overall in the men's hammer.
The Fredericksburg, Va., native recorded a throw of 55.96 meters (183-7 feet) on his first throw of the day and held onto a spot in the top-five. The mark comes just 0.96 meters shy of his mark from last weekend at the Raleigh Relays, where Beatty set the third-best mark in program history.
Beatty's fifth-place finish is his best in the hammer since his second-place finish at the Battle of Blues on April 6, 2019. It's his sixth top-five performance in the combined indoor and outdoor seasons, most notably including a Bronze Medal in the shot put at the ACC Indoor Championships.
The Blue Devils will compete in the bulk of their events at the Virginia Invitational on Saturday, beginning with the men's and women's javelin, women's long jump and women's pole vault at 1:00 p.m.
