DURHAM – The Duke baseball team fell to Wake Forest, 11-0, on Friday night in the first game of a three-game ACC series at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham.
Senior
Joey Loperfido finished 2-for-4 with a double. Loperfido contributed two of Duke's six hits on the evening, including Duke's lone extra-base hit.
In a full staff approach, graduate student
Richard Brereton made the first start of his Duke career, striking out four in 1.1 scoreless innings of work.
A scoreless game through the fifth inning, Wake Forest broke the stalemate in the top of the sixth inning with a four-run frame highlighted by a three-run home run. The Demon Deacons then doubled their lead in the seventh with a grand slam, before adding the game's final three runs in the ninth to win, 11-0.
Freshman
Luke Fox put in valuable innings out of the bullpen for Duke's whole staff approach to the day. The Waukesha, Wis., native allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk in a career-high 3.2 innings pitched. In addition, Fox struck out four during his time on the hill.
Fox's classmate
Nick Conte also entered in relief, making his fifth appearance this season without allowing a run. Conte, a native of North Providence, R.I., allowed just two hits while matching his career high of 1.2 innings of work.
Duke is back in action on Saturday as the Blue Devils host Wake Forest for game two of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.

- Graduate student Jay Gamboa made his first appearance as a Blue Devil, recording his first strikeout in 0.2 innings pitched.
