DURHAM – Duke freshman midfielder
Peter Stroud highlighted the Blue Devils' selections to the 2020 All-ACC Men's Soccer Team as an All-ACC Third Team selection as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon. Stroud and three other Blue Devils also picked up All-Freshman Team recognition.
Stroud is one of three freshmen voted to an All-ACC squad this season and is joined on the All-Freshman team by
Antino Lopez, Nick Pariano and
Thorleifur Ulfarsson. The four selections to the squad are the most of any team in the league and are the most honorees in a season in Duke history.
Stroud, Duke's engine to the offense, started all 17 games for the Blue Devils and dished out three assists on the year. The native of Chester, N.J., ranked second on the team in minutes played at 1,591. Stroud posted his first career point, providing the assist on the Pariano's winning goal in the final seconds of the second overtime against NC State and added assists in wins over Virginia Tech and Virginia. Going the distance in 13 of the 17 games, he was ranked third among freshmen by Top Drawer Soccer at the end of the campaign.
One of Duke's backline anchors, Lopez started all 16 games he played and played a total of 1,544 minutes. He played every minute for the Blue Devils and was a crucial part of Duke's four shutouts on the year. A talented defender, Lopez had the ability to lead from a center back role, but could easily move out wide to run the flank and help provide an offensive spark out of the back. He finished his rookie campaign rated as the 43rd freshman by Top Drawer Soccer.
Pariano, a creator out of the midfield, ranked second on the team with two goals and four assists for eight points. A starter in seven of the 16 games he played, Pariano netted his first career points with a last-second goal in double overtime against NC State. The rookie garnered notice from Top Drawer Soccer for his performance against the Wolfpack and finished the season ranked 32nd among freshmen by the website.
Despite just starting seven games as a freshman, Pariano was instrumental in much of the offensive success for the Blue Devils this season. He was on the field for six of Duke's nine goals in the fall, coming off the bench in three of those contests. At Virginia Tech, the Philadelphia native registered a goal and an assist for three points and was on the field for two first-half goals at Virginia.
Joining the team in January from Iceland, Ulfarsson gave the Blue Devils an offensive spark, scoring a program-best nine points from four goals and an assist in nine outings. Ulfarsson started eight games and played a total of 688 minutes, going the distance in the final two games.
A pure striker, Ulfarsson earned his first career point with an assist in the commanding 4-2 win at Virginia Tech. He notched his first collegiate goal two games later as a Duke comeback came up just short against Pittsburgh. The following week, the rookie put his name out there when he scored a hat trick in a win at Virginia. It was the first three-goal outing for a Blue Devil since 2015 and earned Ulfarsson the ACC Offensive Player of the Week honor among multiple other organizations.
Duke finished the year with a 4-10-3 overall record and went 4-61 against league foes in the unique 2020-21 season.
