DURHAM – Senior Joey Loperfido went 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season to lead the Duke baseball team to a 5-4 win over Liberty on Tuesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham.
Junior Ethan Murray also helped pace Duke's offense, finishing the day 2-for-4. Senior Chris Crabtree boasted three RBIs on the day, including a two-run blast in the first inning.
Freshman Luke Fox made his third start on the mound and allowed two earned runs on four hits, a walk and two hit-by-pitches in 2.2 innings. A native of Waukesha, Wis., Fox also recorded two strikeouts.
Duke (11-10, 5-7 ACC) jumped on Liberty (16-7, 5-1 ASUN) early to take a 4-0 lead after the second inning. In the bottom half of the opening frame, Loperfido sent a home run over the wall in left field to lead off the Blue Devils. Three batters later, Crabtree blasted a home run to left center, scoring graduate student Erikson Nichols who reached on a walk. An inning later, redshirt junior Wil Hoyle's savvy base running saw him score on an error by the catcher while Loperfido stole second.
Liberty nearly made up the deficit in the following innings, scoring twice in the third before adding another in the top of the seventh to make it 4-3.
The Blue Devils doubled their lead in the bottom of the seventh as Crabtree recorded his third RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring graduate Peter Matt.
A solo home run in the top of the eighth by Liberty plated the final run of the game at 5-4.
Duke used six arms out of the bullpen in 6.1 innings of relief. Freshman Josh Allen earned his second collegiate win to improve to 2-1 this season. Allen allowed two hits and struck out one in 1.1 innings of work.
Redshirt sophomore Oliver McCarthy, senior Matt Dockman and sophomore Jimmy Loper also recorded scoreless appearances, going 1.0, 1.1 and 1.0 innings, respectively. Loper earned his team-leading fourth save of the season.
Duke travels to Miami for a three-game series this weekend at Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
