DURHAM, N.C. – No. 14 Duke garnered its third ACC series sweep of the 2021 campaign as the Blue Devils defeated Syracuse, 8-2, to close out the weekend Sunday evening at the Duke Softball Stadium.
The Blue Devils continue their winning ways, extending their win streak to 18 with a 24-1 record and 12-1 mark in league play. With the loss, Syracuse fell to 6-9 and 2-6 on the season.
Three Blue Devils notched a pair of RBIs in the victory, led by sophomore
Kamryn Jackson with her first home run of the season while freshman
Francesca Frelick drove in two with her first career double. Rookie
Kelly Torres also brought two across the plate while catching a career-high two runners stealing.
Junior pitcher
Shelby Walters collected her ninth win in the circle (9-0), dealing five complete innings in which she tallied three strikeouts. Senior
Peyton St. George made her 12th appearance of the year, throwing two innings in relief in which she fanned three batters.
Syracuse plated the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, but Duke quickly responded in the bottom half. Torres singled through the left side and Frelick's two-run double gave the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead.
Senior
Jameson Kavel singled to right center in the third, upping her hit streak to eight games, and scored on an error (3-1). Torres used a sacrifice fly to center field to tally Duke's fourth run before Jackson hit a two-run homer just inside the right field line (6-1).
The Orange scored its final run of the contest in the fifth, crossing home plate after a passed ball. Duke added one run in both the fifth and sixth innings for the 8-2 win. The Blue Devils recorded their last hits in the sixth as freshman
Sarah Goddard and graduate student
Dominique Salinas both singled through the right side.
Duke hits the road next weekend for a four-game series at Clemson, March 26-28, at McWhorter Stadium. Games two and four will be nationally televised on ACC Network as the two top teams in the ACC meet for their first series.
