DUKE VS. COASTAL CAROLINA
Duke faces Coastal Carolina for the third time in program history and the first time since Aug. 28, 2016.
Each of the previous two matches took place at Koskinen Stadium, with the Blue Devils winning by scores of 9-0 and 2-0, respectively. Â
Duke's nine goals scored against the Chanticleers on Aug. 24, 2008 tied a program single-game record. The Blue Devils have netted nine goals five times, with four such performances coming under
Robbie Church.
SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS
Coastal Carolina went 6-5-0 in the fall season and has started the spring with a 1-1-0 mark for a total record of 7-6-0 in 2020-21.
The Chanticleers went 6-4-0 in the Sun Belt Conference before falling to Louisiana in the quarterfinals of the league tournament in November. They began the spring slate on Feb. 28, losing 5-0 at UNCW, before earning a 1-0 win over College of Charleston on March 4.
Junior forward Loranna Austin leads the team with five goals and 11 points. Goalkeeper Ky Hudson has started each match, collecting 68 saves on 87 shots faced for a .782 save percentage. Hudson and the Coastal Carolina defense have posted five shutouts this season.
BACK AT KOSKINEN
Wednesday's match marks a return to Koskinen Stadium for the Blue Devils, after not playing at home since Oct. 9 vs. Virginia Tech. Duke finished the fall season with five consecutive road matches followed by two games in the ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C.
The 160 days between home games for Duke is the longest such gap within a season in program history. The Blue Devils will host another match this spring when they take on Vanderbilt on Sunday, April 11.
Duke is 2-1-2 at home this season and is set to play its first match on a Wednesday.
"It's been a long time returning back to Koskinen Stadium," said head coach
Robbie Church. "We're obviously excited about that, knowing we only have two in the spring. For our seniors to be able to come back and play, and for the rest of our team, we look forward to it. I give really big kudos to our grounds crew. They're having to juggle four sports on that field here, and it still looks really good."
LAST TIME OUT: DUKE 3, UNCW 0
The Blue Devils opened the spring season with a 3-0 victory at UNCW on Saturday, March 6.
Duke wasted little time getting on the board, as senior
Tess Boade opened the scoring 6:31 into the match with her fourth goal of the season. At the 26-minute mark, Boade sent in a high-arching corner kick that senior
Caitlin Cosme headed in to double the Blue Devils' lead.
Three minutes into the second half, Cosme jumped into the play from the back end once again and fed a pass to freshman
Grace Watkins, who one-timed it into the bottom left corner of the net for her first career goal, making it 3-0 in favor of the road team.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ruthie Jones stopped UNCW's only shot of the match to pick up her sixth shutout win of the season.
COSME NAMED ACC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After recording a goal and her first career assist in the spring opener at UNCW, senior

She has now garnered two ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, with the other recognition coming after she scored on a penalty kick in a 2-0 win over Virginia Tech on Oct. 9.

CHURCH LOOKS AHEAD TO COASTAL CAROLINA MATCHUP
"We're excited about the game at UNCWÂ and continuing to build on that," said Church. "I thought we did some really good things, we were very organized both offensively and defensively, but we want to build on that and there were some areas we want to work on. We need to show some growth this week. We've done some video work on it and some training on it, so we're looking to have growth in some areas."
