DEALING IN THE CIRCLE
Shelby Walters is coming off the first no-hitter in Duke softball history as the junior etched her name in the record book last Thursday night with a five-inning 8-0 shutout against NC Central. Walters holds an impressive 0.42 ERA to lead the ACC and is ranked 19th nationally through 33.2 frames.
Senior Peyton St. George and freshman Claire Davidson combined for a program-high 16 strikeouts on Sunday vs. UConn. St. George, who sits third in the league with 54 strikeouts and 32nd in the country, tallied 11 in the victory while Davidson struck out five of the final six batters of the contest.
WEEKLY WRAP-UP
With one road win at Charlotte and two home victories against NC Central and UConn, Duke went undefeated for its second straight week. Senior Rachel Crabtree lifted Duke to victory in extra innings with a game-winning home run as the Blue Devils topped the 49ers', 5-3, in eight innings.
Highlighted by Walters' no-hitter, Duke plated all eight of its runs in the bottom of the fifth to notch an 8-0 run-rule victory against NCCU. Entering the fifth tied 0-0, it took just five minutes and 17 seconds between the Blue Devils' first run and the game-ending two-run homer to right off the bat of senior Sydney Bolan.
St. George and Davidson were lights out in the circle in the weekend finale against the Huskies, tallying a program record 16 K's to combine for Duke's fourth one-hitter of the year. Sophomore Gisele Tapia went 2-for-4 while sophomore Kamryn Jackson and junior Caroline Jacobsen both garnered doubles.
DOUBLE BUBBLE TOSS
The Blue Devils lead the league with 38 doubles to rank third nationally, while standing fourth with 2.38 doubles per game. Senior Jameson Kavel has an ACC-leading six doubles for 13th best in the country. Crabtree and junior Deja Davis are closely behind with five doubles while 12 Blue Devils have recorded at least one this season.
