DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team is set to open the spring portion of the 2021 season Tuesday, February 9 against VCU in Richmond, Va. Tuesday's contest will be broadcast on ESPN+ at 4 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Duke closed out the fall portion of its schedule with a 3-0 victory over Virginia Oct. 30.
During the fall, the Blue Devils went 6-2 in action as they defeated NC State and Virginia twice and slit matches against North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Duke will look to carry that momentum into the spring portion of the 2020-21 season.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
Duke leads the series 7-1 against VCU as the two squads haven't met on the court since the 2006 season when the Blue Devils secured a 3-0 sweep in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Head coach
Jolene Nagel is 1-0 against the Rams.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
The Rams enter Tuesday's contest 5-0 this spring and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 conference. Most recently, VCU defeated Saint Louis (3-1) on Friday.
VCU is hitting .276 percent as a team and is led by Lauren King (53), Paula Neciporuka (39) and Qairo Bentley (34). The Rams have also picked up 51.5 blocks over their last five matches and are led by Jasmine Knight with 27 total blocks and Kylie Loftis with 22.
AMONG THE TOP IN THE ACC
Duke will start the spring third in the conference after going 6-2 during fall competition. The Blue Devils enter Tuesday's match in the top five of ACC statistics in four different categories: opponent hitting percentage (2nd), blocks (4th), opponent blocks (5th), service aces (tied for 2nd) and digs (2nd).
The Blue Devils racked up 522 digs in the fall for a 16.31 dig/set average and accumulated 48 service aces (1.50 ace/set). In the fall, Duke once led the nation in blocks per set and is now fourth in the conference with 82.0 total team blocks and 2.56 blocks/set.
THE BLOCK PARTY MOVES TO THE SPRING
Duke's block was outstanding this fall season with 82.0 total team blocks (2.56 blocks/set). The Blue Devils' best middle blockers from the 2019 season made a huge impact during Duke's eight fall contests as
Lily Cooper and
Lizzie Fleming combined for 68 blocks and 10 solo.
Rookie
Georgia Stavrinides is fifth in the conference with 24 blocks (1.20 blocks/set) followed by Fleming in eighth 36, (1.13 blocks/set). Cooper (32, 1.00),
Ade Owokoniran (22, 0.69) and
Gracie Johnson (16, 0.52) round out Duke's ACC blocking presence.

Duke featured five players with 50+ kills in eight contests as junior
Ade Owokoniran leads the team with 88 and a .160 hitting percentage. Senior
Payton Schwantz checks in with 86 and a whopping .277 hitting percentage, followed by sophomore
Gracie Johnson with 81, junior
Lily Cooper with 65 and sophomore
Lizzie Fleming with 52.
Duke hit .216 during the fall and limited its opponents to a .158 clip.
CAN YOU DIG IT?
Duke racked up 522 total digs in the fall to rank second in the ACC as six Blue Devils reached the 20+ dig plateau. Junior libero
Mackenzie Cole leads the pack with 142 (4.44 digs/set) to rank fifth in the ACC, followed by
Payton Schwantz (105),
Alex Springate (72),
Ade Owokoniran (60),
Gracie Johnson (51) and
Camille Nazor (21).
Cole is just 17 digs from reaching the 1,000-dig plateau.
