DURHAM, N.C.—Duke senior midfielder
Nakeie Montgomery scored three goals and handed out an assist in the fourth quarter to lift the top-ranked Blue Devils to a 16-12 victory against Robert Morris Sunday evening. Duke moves to 2-0 after two games in three days.
Senior
Cameron Badour also added a hat trick, while
Michael Sowers had three assists to push his season total to six. Sixteen different players had at least one point in the win, including three tallies from a trio of defensive players.
Sophomore close defenseman
Tyler Carpenter had a superb outing, scoring a goal, picking up five ground balls and causing four turnovers.
Mike Adler came off the bench to make 11 saves and earn his first victory as a Duke goaltender.
The Blue Devils got off to a slow start as Robert Morris (0-1) scored the first four goals of the game and led 5-1 midway through the first period. The Colonials' four goals came in a span of 5:46 from four different players.
Duke got on the board from a slightly unexpected source as
Terry Lindsay took a
Jake Naso pass and rifled it into the net. The assist was the first point for the rookie faceoff specialist Naso and the goal was Lindsay's fifth of his career.
Naso was excellent at the faceoff X, winning 19-of-28 and picking up nine ground balls.
After Robert Morris answered to take a 5-1 lead at 7:25 of the first quarter, Duke regrouped defensively and held the Colonials without a goal for the next 31:18 to build a 9-5 advantage in the third quarter.
Graduate student transfer
Phil Robertson joined the Duke stat line with a man-up goal at the 4:53 mark, his first goal as a Blue Devil, and Duke added four more in the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead into the break. All four goals came from different players, while three were assisted.
Duke tacked on three more goals in the first 5:20 of the third quarter for a 9-5 advantage.
Owen Caputo had a pair of assists in the third-quarter spurt.
Robert Morris refused to go away, pulling back within two a couple of times, but Montgomery's three goals in a span of 3:29 and a second goal from Robertson gave Duke its largest lead of the day, 16-10, with 3:42 remaining.
The Colonials added a couple late goals to bring the final to, 16-12. Corson Kealey had four goals and an assist to lead Robert Morris and Ryan Smith had three goals and an assist. Ben Savick had 15 saves in goal for the Colonials.
Duke returns to action against Mercer, Feb. 13. Faceoff is at 3 p.m., on ACCNX.
