BLACKSBURG, Va. – Redshirt-senior
Ben Beatty set a new Duke indoor record in the men's shot put, recording a mark of 18.42 meters to highlight the second day of competition at the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
Beatty entered the day with the No. 2 all-time distance at Duke of 18.01m (59-1.25 feet), and his performance put him in front of
Stephen Boals' previous record of 18.16m (59-7.0 feet). Beatty's mark was good for third in the event on Saturday.
Another strong Duke performance came in the men's 4x400m relay, where the quartet of graduate student
Alex Schwedt and freshmen
Alejandro Rodriguez,
Job Trahan and
Jackson Walker clocked a time of 3:14.69 to finish second. That time ranks fourth in Duke indoor history.
The women's 4x400m relay squad that included seniors
Erin Marsh and
Lauren Hoffman, along with junior
Kelcie Simmons and sophomore
Carly King, finished third with a time of 3:40.30.
A pair of Blue Devils posted impressive times in the mile, beginning with junior
Joe Cullen recording a PR time of 4:16.29 in the men's race. In the women's run that followed, senior
Leigha Torino took fourth overall with a time of 4:51.76.
Sophomore
Elasia Campbell continued her strong indoor season with a fourth-place height of 1.71m (5-7.25) in the women's high jump.
In her first competition since January of 2020, sophomore
Kinsie Huggins recorded a shot put distance of 13.02m (42-8.75). That mark is over seven feet farther than what she recorded at the Carolina Challenge at last season's indoor opener.
Duke heads to Clemson next weekend for the Tiger Paw Invite. Events begin Friday, Feb. 12 and carry through Saturday, Feb. 13.
