DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke track & field team continues the indoor season when it travels to Clemson, S.C., to compete in the Tiger Paw Invite Feb. 12-13.
Clemson will host 15 schools, including seven ranked programs, for events that carry from Friday through Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils head back to Clemson five weeks after they opened the season at the Orange and Purple Elite Meet on Jan. 9.
FIELD EVENTS
- The field slate kicks off Friday with the men's shot put, women's long jump and women's pole vault set for 12 p.m. ET.
- In the men's shot put, redshirt-senior Ben Beatty will look to follow up a record-setting performance last week at the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet in Blacksburg, Va., where he recorded Duke's top all-time mark of 18.42 meters (60-5.25 feet). Beatty overtook former Blue Devil standout Stephen Boals, who held the previous school record since 2015.
- Senior Erin Marsh and junior Isabel Wakefield will compete in the women's long jump at noon. Marsh posted the team's season-best distance of 5.83m (19-1.5) at the Hokie Invitational three weeks ago, which went in as one of her four first-place performances in the pentathlon.
- Wakefield will try to best her PR of 5.85m (19-2.5) that she set in February of 2020.
- Sophomore Brynn King will be Duke's lone representative in the women's pole vault. King has placed in the top-10 in each of her four high jump appearances this season, and she cleared a first-place height of 4.00m (13-1.5) in the season-opening meet at Clemson.
- The men's long jump will wrap up Friday's field competitions at 3 p.m. ET.
- Sophomore Ezra Mellinger will try to continue his stellar start to the indoor season in the long jump after taking first or second place in his four performances thus far.
- The Ronks, Pa., native recorded a first-place distance of 7.27m (23-10.25) at the Orange and Purple Elite Meet, which earned him ACC Co-Men's Field Performer of the Week. At the Hokie Invitational two weeks later, he posted a top mark of 7.63m (25-0.5), which went in as a personal record and the third-best jump in Duke indoor history.
- Saturday's schedule on the field begins with the women's high jump taking place at 11 a.m. ET.
- Sophomore Elasia Campbell and freshman Brianna Smith will take part in the women's high jump.
- Campbell has posted three top-five heights this season, including a first-place clearance of 1.70m (5-7.0) at the Orange and Purple Elite Meet.
- Smith finished second at the Orange and Purple Elite Meet, which was her collegiate debut, with a height of 1.65m (5-5.0). Her personal-best came during the pentathlon at the Hokie Invitational, where she cleared 1.67m (5-5.75).
- Sophomore Beau Allen will conclude Duke's weekend on the field when he competes in the men's high jump at 2:30 p.m. Allen has had three top-10 placements this season, led off by a second-place height of 2.05m (6-8.75) at the season-opening meet at Clemson.
TRACK EVENTS
- Track events begin on Friday at noon E.T. with six Blue Devils lining up in the 60m hurdle prelims.
- The group includes sophomore Halle Bieber, freshman Brianna Smith, sophomore Maya Provencal, junior Isabel Wakefield, sophomore Elasia Campbell and senior Erin Marsh.
- Marsh holds the team's seasonal-best time of 8.32 seconds, which she ran at the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
- Wakefield also had a memorable performance in Blacksburg last week, as her PR time of 8.50 seconds ranks as the fourth-fastest in Duke indoor history.
- Senior Leigha Torino and sophomore Rylee Bowen are slated to run the women's mile at 12:45 p.m. Last weekend at Virginia Tech, Torino finished third with a time of 4:51.76, while Bowen recorded a PR time of 5:07.45 to place ninth.
- The women's 60m dash prelims at 1:25 p.m. feature freshman Hailey Williams as well as sophomores Jenna Crean and Maya Provencal.
- Provencal recorded a PR time of 7.63 seconds last weekend to place fifth.
- Williams got her collegiate career started with a second-place finish of 7.72 seconds at the Orange and Purple Elite Meet. She will aim to beat her PR time of 7.70 on Friday.
- Junior Kelcie Simmons, senior Lauren Hoffman, sophomore Carly King and junior Nikki Merritt will join Crean in the women's 400m at 1:55 p.m.
- Hoffman clocked the team's seasonal-best 400m time of 56.03 seconds at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet. In her two appearances in the event this season, she has finished sixth and fifth overall.
- Friday will be Simmons' second 400m in her Duke career. Her last 400m competition was at the 2019 Tiger Paw Invite, when she clocked a time of 57.59.
- Crean finished second in the event at the Virginia Tech Invitational earlier this season, before posting a seasonal-best time of 57.57 last weekend in Blacksburg.
- King's sixth-place time of 56.06 seconds last week went in as a PR.
- Duke runners in the men's 400m include senior Miles Mingo, graduate-student Alex Schwedt, freshman Jackson Walker and freshman Alejandro Rodriguez.
- Mingo's PR time of 47.45, which he ran at last season's ACC Indoor Championships, ranks second all-time at Duke.
- Schwedt posted the program's fifth-fastest indoor 400m time when he clocked 48.05 at the Hokie Invitational.
- Saturday's track slate begin with Bowen, Marsh, Torino and Wakefield competing in the women's 800m at 12 p.m.
- Torino's PR time of 2:08.99 at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet was the fastest by a Duke runner this season.
- Bowen took fourth place in the 800m at the Hokie Invitational, clocking her own PR time of 2:13.40.
- Walker and junior Joe Cullen will seek to replicate early season success in the men's 800m at 12:25 p.m.
- Walker finished first at the Hokie Invitational with a time of 1:53.44 in his collegiate debut. He beat that time two weeks later, clocking 1:52.74 at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
- Cullen took fourth at the Hokie Invitational, and his time of 1:54.81 last weekend marked a PR.
- Bieber, King, Merritt, Simmons and Williams will compete in the women's 200m at 1:05 p.m.
- Simmons posted finishes of second and sixth in her two 200m races this season.
- Her personal-best time of 23.82 seconds, recorded last indoor season, ranks third all-time at Duke.
- Mellinger and Schwedt are set to line up for the men's 200m at 1:55 p.m. Schwedt's first 200m in a Duke uniform came last weekend at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet, where he clocked a time of 21.98 to finish eighth.
- Mellinger took sixth last weekend with a seasonal-best 21.71 mark. He has finished in the top-10 in each of his three 200m appearances this season.
- The women's and men's 4x400m relays will wrap up the weekend for Duke, with the women's race getting started at 3:10 p.m. and the men's run following at 3:25 p.m.
