The Opening Faceoff
- Duke made its 2021 debut after 332 days away and turned in a thrilling 12-10 comeback victory over a top-10 Denver squad. The Blue Devils trailed 6-1 early in the second quarter, but held the Pioneers to only two second half goals en route to the win.
- Duke features a roster of 56 players this season with 16 of the Blue Devils in their fifth year of collegiate lacrosse. Head coach John Danowski welcomed six fifth-year transfers to the program, while 10 of Duke's 2020 seniors returned to complete their eligibility after being granted an extra year due to the COVID-19 shortened season.
- The Blue Devils have 92 percent of their scoring back from last season and welcome the return of top attackman, Joe Robertson, from injury to bolster the scoring even more. Both Robertson and Joey Manown have over 100 career points, while sophomore Dyson Williams has 30 after just eight games.
- Robert Morris is making its 2021 debut Sunday after playing six games in 2020. The Colonials were 4-2 last season and last played March 7. Robert Morris averaged 14.00 goals per game in 2020, ranking 15th nationally, but also allowed 13.83 per game, sitting 56th overall.

Blue Devil Debuts
- Much has been made of the heralded group of 13 newcomers to Durham. The highly anticipated debuts of Michael Sowers (1-3) and Brennan O'Neill (3-1) did not disappoint as they combined for half of Duke's points in the game.
- Mike Adler got the start in goal, making three saves in his 16 minutes of action. Both rookie Jake Naso and transfer Dan O'Connell took at least one faceoff, while transfer Phil Robertson saw time on man-up. Aidan Danenza ran on the second midfield line in his first collegiate lacrosse game.
The First Time
- There were a host of firsts for the Blue Devils Friday. Sowers and O'Neill both posted their first career points in a Duke uniform. Adler made his first save as the Blue Devil backstop and O'Connell won his first faceoff. Perhaps most exciting of all was the lift junior midfielder Griffin Catlett gave the Blue Devils, scoring his first goal to send Duke into the locker room at halftime with momentum.
- Sophomore Tyler Carpenter earned his first starting assignment and junior midfielder Garrett Leadmon registered his first caused turnover with an outstanding defensive effort in the fourth quarter.
The Streaks Continue
- The point streaks continued for Sowers and Dyson Williams Friday. Sowers has scored at least one point in all 48 of his collegiate games, dating back to his debut Feb. 18, 2017. Sowers has been held with a goal just three times, but has never had fewer than two points in a game – twice versus Yale.
- With one goal against Denver, Williams extended his games with at least one goal to nine – every game in his young career.
- When senior Joe Robertson returns to the field, he will be riding a 29-game point streak, dating back to March 24, 2018.
Scouting Robert Morris
- Robert Morris is only in its 17th season of lacrosse. The Colonials, 4-2 last season, received a boost to its 2021 roster with the return of Jimmy Perkins after two seasons at Utah. He will be in his seventh year, taking advantage of the NCAA waiver granted last spring. He ranks third all-time at RMU in assists per game (1.21) and was an All-NEC Second Team pick in 2018.
- Austin Popovich returns for the Colonials after his breakout season in 2020 came to a half. After registering 30 points in his first 43 career games, the midwest native exploded for 27 points in just six games.
- The Colonials will play nine true road games in a 12-game schedule this season. They are slated to face five opponents in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Top 20.
Up Next
- The Blue Devils continue the three-game homestand to start 2021 next Saturday, Feb. 13 against Mercer.
