CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke fencing team opened the 2021 ACC Fencing Championship Saturday in historic fashion with a program-record 11 individual medals as the Blue Devils won five of the six individual crowns.
Duke posted a nearly unstoppable performance on the women's side, finishing with seven of the nine medalists, including each of the podium finishers in epee and foil. The Blue Devils also had the champions in all three weapons.
Huda Aldadah (epee),
Alex Gorman (saber) and
Zoe Superville (foil) were crowned ACC Champions in their respective events, the first gold medals of their careers. The first-place performances in both epee and foil were the first for the Blue Devil women since fencing returned as an ACC sponsored sport. Gorman took gold in saber for the first time since Jennifer Ling did so in 2016.
Duke won four medals on the men's side, including ACC Champions sophomore
Finn Hossfeld (foil) and freshman
Stephen Kim (saber). The duo collected the first medals of their young Duke careers.
Co-captains
Julia Gianneschi (foil) and
Maria Papadopoulos (epee) also earned a spot on the podium with silver medals in their respective events while rookies
Chloe Beittel (epee) and
Lulu Tang (foil) captured bronze in their first conference championship appearances.
Sophomores
Sam Gruber (foil) and
Danny Campbell III (epee) collected bronze, marking the first medal for Gruber and the second consecutive for Campbell III.
Superville posted a flawless 11-0 record in pool play to earn the top seed in the semifinals. She defeated North Carolina's Tarleton Hunt (15-7) in the semifinal and Duke teammate Gianneschi (15-5) in the final bout.
Gianneschi went up against teammate Tang in the semifinals, securing a 15-11 win to take second place, while Tang played to a 15-11 dub over Hunt in the fence-off for third place.
Aldadah won 10 of her 11 bouts in pool play to garner the top seed and eventually claim gold with wins over North Carolina's Erica Oake (15-7) and Duke's Papadopoulos (15-14). Papadopoulos secured her spot in the finals with a 15-13 victory over fellow Blue Devil Beittel in the semis. Beittel went on to take bronze over Oake by a 15-11 margin.
Gorman and
Zsofia Walter advanced to the semifinal bouts in saber as the first and second seeds, respectively. Gorman defeated fourth-seeded Gillian Lawlor of Boston College (15-7) to advance to the finals where she won by a strong 15-5 margin over Rachel Liu of Boston College.
As the second seed in the foil semifinals, Hossfeld collected seven victories during pool play and went on to defeat teammate and third-seeded Gruber (15-11). In the final bout, Hossfeld came away with a 15-10 win over North Carolina's Connor Head.
Kim reeled in nine wins throughout pool play, garnered the top seed in the saber semifinals and secured his first All-ACC recognition as a rookie. The New York, N.Y., native defeated fourth-seeded Alec Mulvaney (15-12) in the semis before a 15-13 dub over Beni Rabinowitz of North Carolina to secure the medal.
The top two finishers at each weapon comprise the 2021 All-ACC Fencing Team.
The women's team championship will be contested Sunday beginning at 9:30 a.m., while the men's team championship follows at 1 p.m. ACC Network Extra will have live coverage of both championships.
