TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Led by a pair of freshmen, the No. 25 Duke men's golf team posted a 12th-place finish against a stacked field at the Seminole Intercollegiate, which concluded on Sunday at the Golden Eagle CC in Tallahassee.
Jimmy Zheng posted a final-round, even-par 72 and finished the tournament at one-under par 215 (68-75-72), which was good for a tie for 19th. His classmate,
Ian Siebers, was just a stroke behind, posting a 54-hole score of even-par 216 (74-70-72) that included a 72 on Sunday.
Florida State ran away from the field by firing a nine-under team score on Sunday and winning the tournament at 26-under par, nine clear of second-place Oklahoma State (-17). Oklahoma State (-12), Liberty (-11), NC State (-3) and USF (-2) were the other teams to finish in red figures.
Zheng book-ended his Sunday round with birdies on his way to an even-par 72. He opened Friday with a 68 and bounced back from Saturday's 75 with a solid Sunday. He has finished in the top 20 in two of his first three tournaments as a Blue Devil.
Siebers just missed his third top-20 in three tournaments, finishing tied for 21st at even-over par 216. After opening with a 74 on Friday, the freshman was in the red on the weekend with round of 70 and 72.
Senior
Adrien Pendaries signed for a 75 on Sunday and ended the tournament tied for 39th at six-over 222 (78-69-75). Graduate student
Steve DiLisio also carded a 75 Sunday and finished tied for 69th at 12-over 228 (76-77-75). Freshman
Cameron Piedra-Martinez closed strong on Sunday with two birdies over his final holes to post a 74.
Playing individually, senior
Drew Powell finished tied for 49th at eight-over 224 (72-75-77).
Liberty's Alexandre Fuchs went wire-to-wire to claim individual medalist honors by a stroke over Florida State's John Pak.
Duke is back in action March 1-2 at the Wake Forest Invitational at famed Pinehurst No. 2.
