TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Duke men's golf freshman
Jimmy Zheng carded an opening-round 68 to lead the No. 25 Blue Devils on Friday at the Seminole Intercollegiate at Golden Eagle CC in Tallahassee, Fla.
Zheng's impressive scorecard on Friday included four birdies plus an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to finish off his four-under 68. He closed with a spotless, five-under 31 on the back nine, with three birdies, seven pars and his eagle.
The freshman from New Zealand finds himself in a tie for third place, three back of the lead with 36 holes remaining. Liberty's Alexandre Fuchs tops the leaderboard at seven-under par.
As a team, Duke shot a seven-over 295 on Friday and is tied for 10th in a stacked, 15-team field that features 10 teams ranked in the Golfstat Top 50. Tournament host Florida State leads the field through 18 holes at 11-under par, followed by Liberty (-7), Oklahoma State (-5) and USF (-1) as the only teams in red figures.
Senior
Drew Powell, who was playing individually, shot an even-par 72 on Friday to match his best round as a Blue Devil. Powell countered three bogeys with birdies on the par-4 second, the par-5 fourth and the par-five 15th to finish even-par and in a tie for 21st through 18 holes.
Freshman
Ian Siebers shot a two-over 74 on Friday and is tied for 35th, while graduate
Steven DiLisio, who birdied three of his final six holes, posted a four-over 76 and is tied for 55th.
Freshman
Cameron Martinez-Piedra made his debut in the Blue & White and shot five-over 77, while senior
Adrien Pendaries shot a six-over 78.
Saturday's second round begins at 9 a.m. ET, with Sunday's final round set for 8 a.m. ET.
