DURHAM, N.C. – Head coachÂ
Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to welcome the Blue Devils' 2021 recruiting class.
Â
Over the coming weeks, Duke will release individual details about its 12-member class. The latest announcement of the 2021 class is right-handed pitcher
Fran Oschell III.
Â
"Fran Oschell possesses some tangibles that you just can't teach," Pollard said. "He has great length and tremendous leverage in his arm action. The frame and arm remind me so much of former Duke standout Michael Matuella. Fran can really create a tough downhill angle. What sold me was that every time I had the chance to evaluate him he was always in the zone. He is a pitcher that really understands count leverage and is not afraid to challenge the zone and force swings. That fits our philosophy really well here at Duke."
Â
A four-year letterwinner under coach Freddy Hilliard at Malvern Prep, Oschell has enjoyed a successful career. A native of Phoenixville, Pa., Oschell helped lead the program to back-to-back Pennsylvania state championships in 2018 and 2019. In addition, the team won the 2018 Inter-Ac Championships.
Â
Oschell unfortunately saw the cancellation of his junior season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During his sophomore season, Oschell made 12 appearances and started 10 games, putting together an 8-0 record. Oschell allowed just 15 earned runs in 45.1 innings pitched (2.32 ERA). He garnered 39 strikeouts to 12 walks.
Â
As a freshman in 2018, Oschell made six appearances. He threw 17 innings and allowed four earned runs, boasting a 1.65 ERA. Oschell tallied 16 strikeouts and eight walks in those six appearances.
Â
Oschell was rated the fifth right-handed pitcher and ninth overall prospect in the state of Pennsylvania and the 147
th right-handed pitcher and the 416
th overall prospect nationally in the class of 2021. He was named to the 2019 Perfect Game Underclassman All-American Team. Oschell was also tabbed to the 2019 WWBA 16U National Championship All-Tournament Team.
Â
In addition to baseball, Oschell lettered four years as a forward on Malvern Prep's basketball team. He was a two-time All Inter-Ac selection and a 2019 Inter-Ac Champion.
Â
Oschell is the son of Frank and Jenn Oschell. He has two younger brothers, Charlie and Will. His dad, Frank, played collegiate football at Penn and his mom, Jenn, played collegiate field hockey and lacrosse at Lafayette College. In addition, his mom was an assistant coach for the Villanova field hockey team from 1997-2002.
