DURHAM – Sophomore Thorleifur Ulfarsson has been tabbed as a semifinalist for the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy, as the United Soccer Coaches and Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) announced on Tuesday.
Â
Given to the top player in men's and women's NCAA Division I soccer, the MAC Hermann Trophy has been awarded annually since 1967. Ulfarsson is one of 15 semifinalists, with three finalists set to be named on Wednesday, Dec. 15.
Â
The sophomore is the program's first semifinalist since Daniele Proch in 2018. Ulfarsson could become the program's first MAC Hermann Trophy winner since Andrew Wenger in 2011.
Â
Hailing from Kopavogur, Iceland, Ulfarsson had a breakout sophomore campaign after joining the Blue Devils last spring. Tabbed the 2021 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Ulfarsson was one of the top scorers in the nation, with 15 goals and one assist for 31 points in just 16 games. The sophomore leads the ACC in nearly every statistical category, including goals, points, game winning goals and more. Awards have piled up for Ulfarsson this season, as he was named All-ACC First Team, the national player of the week by College Soccer News, TopDrawerSoccer and the United Soccer Coaches, in addition to ACC All-Tournament Team and ACC Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
One of three semifinalists who are a sophomore or younger, Ulfarsson finished his season in a tie for eighth place on Duke's single season goal scoring list, with his head coach and 1986 Hermann Trophy and MAC Player of the Year winner John Kerr, 1999 Hermann winner Ali Curtis and 1998 MAC Player of the Year Jay Heaps.
Â
The 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., on Jan. 7, 2022, where the winners will be announced.
