Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to introduce the incoming freshman class.
Over the fall semester, GoDuke.com will release individual introductions of its 12-member freshman class.

A native of Rochester Hills, Mich.,
Alex Mooney is the ninth member of Duke's freshman class to be introduced this fall.

"Alex had a terrific fall, both offensively and defensively, posting over 1.000 ops in fall scrimmage and exhibition action," Pollard said. "He combines great physical tools, with a tremendous love of the game and a burning desire to be a good teammate. That's a recipe for success. He has both the tangibles and the intangibles to be a really special player at this level and beyond."

Mooney lettered four seasons at Orchard Lake St. Mary's under head coach Matt Petry. He assisted St. Mary's to two Michigan Division 2 State Championships as a sophomore and a senior. Mooney arrived to Durham rated the top freshman in college baseball, per
Perfect Game. He was ranked 12th overall and the No. 5 shortstop nationally, as well as the top recruit in Michigan in the class of 2021 by
Perfect Game.

As a senior, Mooney hit .460 with 11 doubles, four tiples, nine home runs and 57 RBIs in 44 games on his way to Michigan Mr. Baseball Perfect Game/Rawlings High School Player of the Year and 2021 MHSAA Dream Team honors. In addition, Mooney slugged .791 with a .564 on-base percentage while stealing 28 bases in 29 attempts.

Prior to his junior season being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mooney also earned MHSAA Dream Team and Michigan High School Player of the Year honors as a sophomore in 2019. He hit .444 with 115 doubles, seven home runs and 42 RBIs that season. Mooney also stole 21 bases.

In club ball, Mooney played for Canes National and earned numerous honors. He was named a Perfect Game All-American and an Under Armour All-American, in addition to being tabbed the MVP of the 2020 Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Off the field, Mooney was a member of National Honor Society and was the 2018 and 2020 class president at St. Mary's.

Born Alexander Joseph Mooney on July 6, 2002, he is the son of Joseph and Jennifer Mooney. He has two brothers, Jack and Ryan. Alex's dad, Joseph, was a member of the Michigan baseball program from 1990-91, earning the team's Steve Boros Award as the top scholar athlete in 1991.
