DURHAM – As the Blue Devils prepare for the 2022 baseball season, head coachÂ
Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to introduce the incoming freshman class.
Over the fall semester, GoDuke.com will release individual introductions of its 12-member freshman class.
Â
Right-handed pitcher
Ryan Higgins is the fifth member of Duke's class to be introduced this fall.
Â
"Ryan flashes a high spin fastball that has topped at 94 this fall to go with a breaking ball that has substantial vertical depth," head coach
Chris Pollard said. "He's a guy that is going to make hitters have to cover a really big zone vertically. I have been impressed with his ability to pound the strike zone in high leverage situations. There is a lot there to be excited about."
Â
Higgins enjoyed a standout career at St. Luke's School in New Canaan, Conn. under head coach Sam Colon. After seeing his junior season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Higgins concluded his career with 57 strikeouts and a 1.82 ERA in 29.2 innings of work as a senior.
Â
As a sophomore, the right-handed pitcher recorded a 0.71 ERA through 19.2 innings pitched. He produced a 3-0 record in six appearances, totaling 23 strikeouts and giving up just two earned runs.
Â
In the batter's box, Higgins averaged .270 with 11 hits, eight runs, four RBI and three doubles in 16 appearances. He also recorded a .341 slugging percentage and stole one base.
Â
Apart from school ball, Higgins was a member of the Canes National 17u Team. The team ranked first regionally (coastal) and second nationally in the 17u age division and won multiple tournaments, including the 2020Â
Perfect Game 17u National Elite Championship. Higgins also played in the East Coast Pro Showcase, Area Code Games andÂ
Perfect Game National Showcase.
Â
According toÂ
Perfect Game, Higgins was tabbed as the No. 3 right-handed pitcher and No. 5 overall player out of the state of Connecticut.
Â
Higgins excelled on the diamond and in the classroom, earning AP Scholar honors as a sophomore and junior.
