Blue Devils Open Season at Battle at The Citadel

DURHAM – Duke wrestling is set to open its 2021-22 season Saturday when it travels to Charleston, S.C., for the Battle at The Citadel.

Matches will begin at 9 a.m., with the Blue Devils competing alongside the tournament hosts The Citadel, as well as No. 5 NC State, Air Force and Presbyterian. Brackets and scores will be updated via FloArena.

Duke returns most of its lineup from last season and will kick off a full slate of action after last year was limited to conference action due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Leading the way for this season's team will be twin redshirt seniors Josh Finesilver and Matt Finesilver. The former had a strong 2021 campaign, going 9-5 with a 3-2 record in ACC duals. The Greenwood Village, Colo., native defeated a career-high three ranked opponents and one top-five wrestler, all of which came at the 2021 NCAA Championship.

His brother, Matt, missed the 2021 season due to injury but returns in pursuit of his third trip to the NCAA Championship. Matt Finesilver owns a career record of 51-20 and was the 2019 ACC runner up at 174 pounds.

Both Finesilver brothers carry national rankings via InterMat, with Matt checking in at No. 8 in the nation at 174 pounds and Josh at No. 12 in the 149-pound weight class.

Other names to watch this Saturday include sophomore Logan Agin, who reached the ACC semifinals at 125 pounds as a freshman, and junior Jonah Niesenbaum, who joined Josh Finesilver as one of two Blue Devils to record two wins at the 2021 UWW U-23 Nationals this summer.

Junior Wade Unger will return to the Battle at The Citadel after having success there as a freshman, reaching the quarterfinal in Charleston two seasons ago.
