Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to introduce the incoming freshman class.
Over the fall semester, GoDuke.com will release individual introductions of its 12-member freshman class.

A native of Harrisburg, N.C., Sam Yelton is the eighth member of the Duke's freshman class to be introduced this fall.

"Sam played for two great coaches and great programs during his high school career in Ronnie Bost at Central Cabarrus and Don Hutchens with the South Charlotte Panthers," Pollard said. "The left-handed bat, combined with his foot speed, make him a versatile offensive player. I have also been impressed with the accuracy of his throwing arm from multiple spots in the outfield this fall."

Yelton lettered four seasons at Central Cabarrus High School under head coach Ronald Bost. Yelton enjoyed a successful four seasons at Central Cabarrus, culminating in all-conference honors after batting .359 with 16 RBIs in 12 games during the shortened 2021 season after missing his junior season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a sophomore, Yelton hit .439 with 22 doubles and 17 RBIs in 22 games, all starts. He was named the to the North Carolina AAA All-State Team, Conference Player of the Year and to the All-Observer First Team.

Yelton opened his career ledger with 25 appearances as a freshman, hitting .373 with eight doubles, a triple and a home run. He also added 27 RBIs with 14 walks and 10 stolen bases.

Off the field, Yelton was a member of the BETA Club and received the Outstanding Achievement Award in social studies.

Born Samuel Edward Yelton on June 12, 2002, he is the son of Todd and Brenda Yelton. He has one bother, Talon, and a sister, Breezy. Sam's grandfather, Mike Harell, graduated from Duke in 1973.
