DURHAM – As the Blue Devils prepare for the 2022 baseball season, head coachÂ
Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to introduce the incoming freshman class.
Over the fall semester, GoDuke.com will release individual introductions of its 12-member freshman class.
Â
A native of Phoenixville, Pa., Fran Oschell III is the seventh member of the Duke's freshman class to be introduced this fall.
Â
"Fran combined high strike percentages with a lot of swing and miss this fall," Duke head coach
Chris Pollard said. "That's a great combination. His long frame, combined with his release point, create a deceptive angle for hitters. He has created a lot of really uncomfortable at-bats for our guys this fall."
Â
Oschell lettered four seasons under coach Freddy Hilliard at Malvern Prep. In 113 career innings, Oschell held a 2.31 ERA with an overall record of 18-2. He finished his career with 123 strikeouts and a 1.12 WHIP as he was a two-time state champion and two-time conference champion.
Â
After missing the entirety of his junior season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Oschell concluded his career with a strong senior season. He put together a 1.78 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 50.2 innings of work. He made 12 appearances, including 10 starts and five complete games, on his way to Inter-AC League MVP honors.
Â
As a sophomore, Oschell finished with a 2.32 ERA and an 8-0 record in 12 appearances. He fanned 39 batters in 45.1 innings pitched.
Â
Oschell was tabbed the seventh-ranked right-handed pitcher out of Pennsylvania and the 13th overall player from the state by Perfect Game. He was ranked as the 417th overall player in the freshman class.
Â
In addition to success the diamond, Oschell was a four-year letterwinner and three-time all-conference selection for the Malvern Prep basketball team. He assisted the team to the 2019 conference championship as a sophomore.
Â
Born Francis Joseph Oschell III on October 18, 2002, he is the son of Frank and Jenn Oschell. He has two brothers, Charlie and Will. Both of his parents played collegiate athletics as his dad, Frank, was a member of the Pennsylvania football team and his mom, Jenn, played field hockey at Lafayette. His mom went on to be an assistant field hockey coach at Villanova from 1997-2002.
