SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In a battle of two of the top teams in the ACC Coastal Division, the No. 18 Duke men's soccer program (10-3-1, 4-2-1 ACC) battled through two overtimes to a 1-1 draw with No. 20 Notre Dame (9-4-2, 4-1-2 ACC) on Friday night.
Â
Duke got another goal from sophomore
Thorleifur Ulfarsson, who tallied his tenth of the season on assists from freshman
Shakur Mohammed and sophomore
Antino Lopez. Senior goalkeeper
Eliot Hamill was rock solid, making four saves to preserve the draw.
Â
The goal by Ulfarsson made him the second in the ACC to reach double figures and third in the ACC with 20 or more points.Â
Â
Right off the bat, Hamill had to be sharp. Notre Dame took possession around midfield and raced to Duke's end of the field, where Dawson McCartney ripped a shot that Hamill was forced to make a near post save on just one minute into the game.
Â
However, his offense would pick him quickly, as Lopez fired a through ball from midfield into the Fighting Irish's box. A streaking Mohammed beat his defender and sent a ball across the box to an open Ulfarsson, who made no mistake and tucked into the net to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
Â
Chances would be hard to come by for the remainder of the half, as both teams clamped down on the defensive end. Hamill stopped the best chance from either side, when he made a diving save to his left on a header from Notre Dame's leading scorer Jack Lynn in the 19th minute.
Â
The Irish were able to get a quick response in the second half when defensive miscommunication led to a goal from Tyler Shea. Shea found the ball off an assist after Notre Dame was able to block a Hamill clearing attempt in the box in the 48th minute.Â
Â
Ulfarsson nearly had his second of the game late in the second half, when sophomore
Peter Stroud's run drew a foul just outside the box, allowing Ulfarsson a set piece opportunity. Ulfarsson fired a shot into the bottom left corner, forcing Notre Dame's goalkeeper Bryan Dowd to make his best save of the night.
Â
With just over two minutes remaining, the Blue Devils were able to make a huge defensive stop after a ball got loose in the six-yard box and rolled off the left post. Lynn was able to get a shot off, but it went high as Hamill and senior
Ian Murphy were able to affect the attempt just enough to escape danger and force overtime.
Â
The two teams would trade blows throughout both overtime periods, with neither side breaking. Freshman
Jai Bean had a prime opportunity in the first overtime, getting free off a pass from sophomore
Nick Pariano, but Dowd was able to make the save.
Â
With just seconds remaining, it was Duke and Hamill that needed to make one final save. This time, Hamill was able to stop Matthew Roou and preserved the tie.
Â
The Blue Devils will conclude the regular season and celebrate senior day on Friday, Oct. 29, as they welcome Virginia to Koskinen Stadium at 7 p.m.
