DURHAM – The 13th-ranked Duke men's soccer program (11-3-1, 5-2-1 ACC) outlasted a rally by Virginia (6-8-3, 2-5-1 ACC), winning an overtime thriller, 3-2, on Friday night in Koskinen Stadium. With the win, the Blue Devils earned ACC Coastal Division Co-Champion honors.
Duke ends the regular season with 16 points, tied with Pittsburgh for the most points in the ACC. As a result, the Blue Devils and Panthers will share the Coastal Division crown. It's the team's first Coastal Division title since the ACC adopted a two-division format in 2014.
"We had to continue to believe in ourselves and fight our way out of it and execute down the stretch," said head coach
John Kerr. "We work on our corner kicks on a regular basis, and it was nice to see Lewis [McGarvey] step up and finish one."
The Blue Devils got an overtime winner from sophomore
Lewis McGarvey, who buried a header in the 97th minute. Duke got its first two goals from sophomores
Antino Lopez and
Thorleifur Ulfarsson, while sophomores
Nick Pariano and
Luke Thomas and freshman
Ruben Mesalles each registered assists. Senior goalkeeper
Eliot Hamill registered two saves in the win.
While both teams gained their footing in the first 20 minutes, it was the Blue Devils who were able to strike first. Ulfarsson drew a foul just outside the righthand side of the box, setting up Mesalles for a set piece.
The Longboat, Fla., native ripped a shot into the bottom right corner that the Cavaliers goalkeeper Holden Brown made a difficult save on, but Lopez was right there to clean up the mess for his first collegiate goal. For Lopez, it also marks points in back-to-back games for the first time in his collegiate career.
Ulfarsson had a golden chance in the 33rd minute off another set piece, this time from Pariano, who sent a corner kick into the six-yard box. The ball found the head of Ulfarsson, who just missed as his shot rang off the crossbar.
Ulfarsson would continue to earn several of the Blue Devils best chances, finally connecting in the second half. Off yet another set piece from Pariano in the 65th minute, the Philadelphia, Pa., native delivered a low liner into the box. The ball was cleverly flicked on by Thomas towards goal and off the leg of Ulfarsson, extending the Blue Devils lead to 2-0.
Despite the two-goal deficit with just over 20 minutes to play, the Cavaliers mounted a comeback. Virginia was able to get goals from Leo Afonso (68') and Will Citron (79') to pull even. The Blue Devils were able to create two more chances, as Ulfarsson and Mesalles forced Brown to make saves late, but the game advanced to overtime.
In overtime, the Cavaliers nearly had a winner, when Afonso's shot grazed off the left post. However, the Blue Devils were able to capitalize on the third set piece goal of the day. Mesalles took a corner kick in the 97th minute and found a cutting McGarvey, who leaped for yet another brilliant header, overpowering Brown in tight and securing a 3-2 win.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 7, as the No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament. The ACC released the bracket for the
2021 ACC Tournament, with the Blue Devils set to host the quarterfinal at 2 p.m., against either No. 6 seed Wake Forest or No. 11 Virginia. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
