KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Duke wrapped up its first exhibition game of the fall as it faced Davidson Saturday afternoon at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, N.C.

The Blue Devils and Wildcats battled for 12 innings in a situational scrimmage to prepare for the 2022 season. An official score was not kept.Â

"I thought we did a lot of things really well, but we certainly left Kannapolis knowing we have a lot of things to work on," Duke head coach
Chris Pollard said. "We had a really good approach at the plate, and we were aggressive on the bases. Our freshmen showed terrific poise in their first game against outside competition."

Freshman
Andrew Yu started behind the plate for Duke, leading the team with a 3-for-3 performance with a double and two RBIs. The Nashville, Tenn., native hit a double to plate two runs in his first plate appearance. Â

Sophomore infielder
Luke Storm finished 2-for-4 with a two-run home run to right center while classmate catcher
Alex Stone went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Graduate student
Chris Crabtree started as a designated hitter and put together a 2-for-4 performance, recording two doubles and scoring two runs. Senior
Matt Stinebiser entered in the eighth inning, leading off the eighth with a solo shot to right center to go 1-for-2 with a walk.

On the mound, a trio of freshmen impressed in their first appearances against opposition. Rookie right-hander
Fran Oschell III and southpaw
Jonathan Santucci each struck out three while surrendering one hit in two innings of work. Classmate right-handed pitcher
Ryan Higgins recorded four punch outs in two hitless innings.

"We are grateful to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers staff," Pollard said of the hosts. "They showed us great hospitality throughout the day and Atrium Health Ballpark is a beautiful facility."

Duke returns to action on Friday, Oct. 22, as the Blue Devils face NC State at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m., and tickets can be purchased
