Blue Devils Fall to No. 13 North Carolina

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke dropped its home-opening dual to No. 13 North Carolina, 29-9, on Friday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Freshman Logan Agin, redshirt junior Josh Finesilver and sophomore Jonah Niesenbaum all registered victories for the Blue Devils, including Agin's first career win.

Agin put Duke ahead 3-0 after taking down Wil Guida in the 125-pound matchup by a 6-4 decision. The Lancaster, Ohio, native jumped out to a quick 6-1 edge after the first period before holding on down the stretch for his first win in a Blue Devil singlet.

Two matches later no. 19 ranked Finesilver shifted to 2-0 on the year after he defeated Nick Lirette by a 13-7 decision at 149-pounds. Just like Agin, Finesilver created a big gap between the wrestlers after one period by garnering 10 of his final 14 points in the opening frame. His win pulled Duke to within 7-6 in the overall dual and handed him his 44th career victory.

Despite Niesenbaum closing out the dual with a huge 4-3 tie breaker-2 win at 285, the Blue Devils couldn't overcome the double digit deficit.

At the conclusion of the dual, the two schools wrestled 10 additional exhibition matches. Max Fausnaugh (285 lbs.), Vincent Baker (197 lbs.), Drake Doolittle (133 lbs.), Brayden Ray (285 lbs.), and Ben Frye (285 lbs.) all earned wins for the Blue Devils. Frye's victory came thanks to a pin at the 1:15 mark into his match with Adam Honis. In three career bouts, Frye has recorded two falls.

Duke next welcomes No. 6 Virginia Tech to Card Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 29 at 5 p.m. That dual will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. Live stats will also be provided.
