DURHAM, N.C.—Duke men's soccer rookie
Nick Pariano was the hero in overtime as Zaha 5 took home the Dr. K Cup Championship. Zaha 5 captured the regular season crown and posted single-goal victories in the semifinals and finals to take home the cup.
On the Zaha 5 squad are
Michael Reis in goal and Pariano,
Thor Úlfarsson, Cameron Kerr and
Kees Heetderks. Stephen O'Connell is the general manager.
Anchored by Reis in goal, Zaha 5 sacrificed just six goals in the three small-sided games Friday morning. The team sat in second place after day one of competition, and trailed 3-1 at halftime in the first game of the second round. The squad proved it was a second half team, outscoring Carl's Fishermen 5-0 in the second half to finish with seven points in pool play.
While Zaha 5 took home the trophy, the story of the day was the resilient SOP squad. After going 0-2 and posting a minus six goal differential on the opening day, assistant coach and SOP goaltender
Kyle Renfro propelled his team to a 3-2 triumph over Solis 6 to secure the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.
In the semifinals, Zaha 5 edged the No. 4 seed Carl's Fishermen, 3-2, while SOP continued its revenge tour by beating Solis 6, 5-2, for a spot in the title match.
The championship game pitted two red-hot teams against one another and had SOP with revenge on its mind after losing to Zaha 5 in the tournament opener 6-2.
It was a tight affair, with outstanding goalkeeping play from Renfro in the early going. SOP went up first midway through the seven minute game, giving the No. 3 seed hopes of completing the redemption tour. However, Zaha 5 proved that it doesn't always have to be pretty to win as a fortuitous deflection resulted in the tying goal and forced overtime.
Both teams pulled a player off the field, leaving it as a 3 v 3 match with goalkeepers. Just over a minute into the session, Pariano took advantage of small window and beat Renfro on the near post to secure the golden goal victory.
In the consolation game, Solis 6 garnered a 5-0 shutout to take third overall.
The Blue Devils will continue spring training in preparation of for the upcoming spring slate. Details of that schedule are forthcoming.
