DURHAM, N.C. – Head coachÂ
Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to welcome the Blue Devils' 2021 recruiting class.
Â
Over the coming weeks, Duke will release individual details about its 12-member class. Right-handed pitcher
Ryan Higgins is the fourth member of the 2021 class to be announced this offseason.
Â
"Ryan Higgins combines a heavy, high velo fastball with a tremendous competitive spirit," Pollard said. "He will arrive at Duke battle tested, having pitched in numerous big spots for the prestigious Canes National travel organization. He fits our system exceptionally well, because he is a guy who loves to challenge the strike and pitches with no fear of contact. I'm excited for the future and what it holds for Ryan in a Duke uniform."
Â
Higgins enters his final season at St. Luke's School in New Canaan, Conn., after seeing his junior season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, the right-handed pitcher recorded a 0.71 ERA through 19.2 innings pitched in his sophomore season (2019) under coach Sam Colon. He produced a 3-0 record in six appearances, totaling 23 strikeouts and giving up just two earned runs.
Â
In the batter's box, Higgins averaged .270 with 11 hits, eight runs, four RBI and three doubles in 16 appearances. He also recorded a .341 slugging percentage and stole one base.
Â
Apart from school ball, Higgins is on the Canes National 17u Team. The team holds a 25-3-3 record and ranks first regionally (coastal) and second nationally in the 17u age division and has won multiple tournaments, including the 2020
Perfect Game 17u National Elite Championship. Higgins also played in the East Coast Pro Showcase, Area Code Games and
Perfect Game National Showcase.
Â
According to
Perfect Game, Higgins is tabbed as the No. 2 right-handed pitcher and No. 3 overall player out of the state of Connecticut.
Â
Higgins excelled on the diamond and in the classroom, earning AP Scholar honors as a sophomore and junior.
