DURHAM, N.C. – Following the shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19, Duke softball voted on team awards that would've been announced at the end of year banquet.
The Blue Devils put together its best season yet, compiling a 23-4 record while finishing No. 25 in the final ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll. After receiving votes in both major polls for weeks, this was the first time Duke cracked into the top 25 in program history.
True Blue
The True Blue Award is given to the player that best models Duke softball's core values, both on and off the field. After serving as a captain for the third consecutive season, senior
Raine Wilson was the recipient for this year's award.
On the field, Wilson played third base and catcher. She finished the season with a .273 batting average with six doubles and 19 RBIs as she led the team with 11 walks. Wilson graduated in May with a degree in political science and was named to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District III First Team as well as the ACC Honor Roll.
Newcomer
The Newcomer Award is given to the player that had the biggest impact on the team in their first year at Duke – freshmen and transfers. Following her transfer from UCF,
Kendyl Lange had an instant impact on the program.
In her first season as a Blue Devil, Lange saw action in 25 games in which she made the start in 22. The slapper boasted a .327 batting average and went 9-for-11 on stolen bases. Aside from softball, Lange was heavily involved in community service and earned her way onto the ACC Honor Roll for the 2019-20 academic year.
Golden Spikes
The Golden Spikes Award is given to the best base stealer. Junior
Jameson Kavel took home the award after leading the team in stolen bases, going 14-for-15 during the shortened season. Only two shy of tying her single-season high, Kavel is now 44-for-47 in her career at Duke.
Silver Slugger
The Silver Slugger Award is given to the offensive player of the year. Following her breakout sophomore campaign,
Caroline Jacobsen took this year's honor.
Starting in all 27 games this season, Jacobsen put together a .368 batting average and a .789 slugging percentage. She had a team-high 28 hits, 31 RBIs and nine home runs for a single-season program record. Jacobsen finished the year nationally ranked in the top 25 in three categories: 12th in RBIs, 15th in home runs and 24th in RBI per game (1.15).
Golden Glove
The Golden Glove Award is given to the team's best defensive player. Picking up her second award, Kavel received the honor.
Kavel played in 26 games this season, primarily playing in left field and at shortstop, making impressive plays all over the field. From her strong arm, ability to make catches at the wall and being quick on her feet, Kavel had 28 putouts and 13 assists with only one error.
Circle Award
The Circle Award is given to the pitcher that led and executed from the circle. After having a strong start to her junior year,
Peyton St. George received the honor.
St. George led the team with 10 wins through 14 appearances while garnering a team-high 66 strikeouts. She put together a 2.05 earned run average after hurling 68.1 innings. The Mechanicsville, Va., native tied her career-high strikeout count with 12 against Indiana on February 14 during the Big 10/ACC Challenge.
MVP
The MVP Award is given to the player the program can't live without – they've significantly impacted the success of the team, game in and game out. Receiving her third end of the season award, Kavel was named the team MVP for the 2020 campaign. Among her stolen bases and fielding accomplishments, Kavel batted .377 and led the ACC in runs scored (29).
