COLUMBIA, S.C. – A balanced effort on offense led Duke to a 6-2 victory over No. 23 South Carolina Tuesday night at Carolina Softball Stadium. Seven different Blue Devils combined to make up Duke's 11 hits on the night.
With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 16-9 overall while the Gamecocks fall to 15-10 on the year.
Senior
Aminah Vega guided the offense, batting a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. The DeBary, Florida, native was just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle after tallying a single, double and triple during the contest. She also drove in two of Duke's six runs for her seventh multi-RBI game of the season.
Classmate
Cassidy Curd earned the win inside the circle, tossing her third complete game in as many appearances. She surrendered two runs off six hits while fanning three to improve to 9-2 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Devils wasted no time getting on the board, adding two runs in the top of the first. Senior D'Auna Jennings led off with a double before moving up on Vega's infield single. Redshirt junior Jessica Oakland followed with an RBI-single to score Jennings, and graduate student Tyrina Jones later plated Vega, reaching on a fielder's choice to give the Blue Devils an early 2-0 lead.
- A sacrifice fly to left from Vega made it a 3-0 game in the top of the second.
- South Carolina connected a two-out double and a pair of wild pitches to push its first run across the plate in the bottom of the third.
- Sophomore Layla Lamar extended the Blue Devils' edge to 4-1 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, bringing in Vega who reached on a leadoff double.
- In the top of the seventh, Vega sent a triple off the center field wall to score Jennings, before coming home on a South Carolina throwing error at the plate to push ahead, 6-1.
- The home team added their second run of the night in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run from Tori Ensley but Curd retired the next two batters to put the game away.
NOTES
- Duke tallied its 100th road win with the victory against the Gamecocks. The program is now 100-47 all-time in true road contests.
- Vega extended her hitting streak to a team-best seven games with a base hit in the top of the first. She has tallied at least one hit in 23-of-25 games this season.
