SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior
Cassidy Curd tossed the fourth solo no-hitter in program history as Duke (13-9) rolled past Cal (8-15), 12-0, in five innings at Shea Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.
Curd sat down the first three batters before allowing her first baserunner on a leadoff walk in the top of the second. She settled back in to retire nine of her final 10 batters faced, relinquishing just one additional walk to register her sixth complete game of the year. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native added five strikeouts to her already impressive outing in the circle.
Classmate
Aminah Vega powered the offense, batting 3-for-4 on the day with one RBI. The DeBary, Fla., native also set the program's doubles record with her RBI-double in the top of the first to register 56 career doubles, passing
Jameson Kavel's mark of 55 (2018-2022).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It took the Blue Devils just two pitches to push their first run across the plate. Senior D'Auna Jennings opened the frame with an infield single before scoring on Vega's double to left center to put Duke ahead, 1-0.
- The Blue Devils quickly loaded the bases in the top of the third using a pair of singles and a walk. Freshman Jayla Stafford and redshirt junior Kairi Rodriguez followed with a hit by pitch and base hit to left center, respectively, to extend the gap to 3-0.
- Duke's offense erupted in the fourth, adding four runs off three hits and a pair of Cal errors to pull away 7-0.
- The Blue Devils carried their momentum into the fifth, posting a five-run frame, highlighted by graduate student Tyrina Jones's three-run homer to left field, to put the game out of reach and secure the 12-0 run-rule victory.
NOTES
- Curd earned her 75th career start in the circle and worked the second no-hitter of her Blue Devil career.
