DURHAM, N.C. – Duke baseball senior
Matt Mervis and junior
Thomas Girard have taken the next step into professional baseball, as both signed free agent contracts earlier this week.
Mervis inked a deal with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday evening, while Girard signed with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. The two signings come off the heels of last week's Major League Baseball Draft, where junior
Bryce Jarvis was taken with the 18
th overall pick, marking the highest pick in Duke baseball history.
Mervis, an elected team captain of the 2020 squad, led the Blue Devils both on and off the field, ranking among the tops on the team across multiple statistical categories. The left-handed slugger led the team in hits (17), home runs (3) and total bases (33), while ranking second in RBI (15), as he reached base safely in every contest across the shortened season.
Girard closes out his Duke career as one of the best relievers in program history. He entered the 2020 campaign as a Preseason All-American, being named to both the D1Baseball and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Third Team, while also being tabbed to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List.
Girard made a team-high nine appearances on the season, sporting a 1-1 record with a team-high four saves to tie for third in the ACC. The Simsbury, Conn., native closes out his career tied for second all-time in Duke history for most career saves with 13. The Blue Devil right-hander tallied nine saves in 2019, which is tied for second-most in school single-season history.
