INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the first time in her amateur career, Duke University rising sophomore
Erica Shepherd has won the Indiana Women's State Amateur Championship as she carded a final round three-under-par, 69, to win by four strokes at the Old Oakland Golf Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
Shepherd, a native of Greenwood, Ind., fired rounds of 70, 70 and 69 over three days of action to shoot a seven-under-par, 209. She finished ahead of Julia Potter-Bobb (213) and Cailyn Henderson (214). Shepherd was the only golfer in the field to notch three straight rounds of under par.
"It means a lot to win my first ever Indiana Women's State Amateur Championship Title," Shepherd said. "Everyone who knows me knows that I love where I'm from. I love Indiana. Just to be able to finally win after so many years of competing in this event truly means a lot. I'm super proud of it."
Totaling 12 birdies and five bogeys for the event, the two-time USGA champion went eight-under-par for the week on par fives.
Shepherd struggled out of the gate in the final round as she was two-over-par during her first eight holes, before rolling in a nine-foot birdie on the par five ninth. She sank a 27-foot birdie putt on No. 10 for her second straight birdie and went back to even par for the day. Shepherd dropped a 26-foot birdie on No. 14 and two-foot birdie on No. 15 to move to two-under-par. She added another a 14-foot birdie on the 18th to finish with a 69 Friday. Shepherd overall was five-under-par on the final 10 holes.
"When the back nine hit, I tend to do better when I'm under pressure," Shepherd said. "When I start to feel the pressure, I start thinking about winning and that's when stuff starts coming together."
Shepherd hit 15 greens, 11 fairways and had 30 putts in the final round. She missed only eight greens over the three days of action.
"I felt really good coming into this event," Shepherd said. "I had the warm-up round on Sunday in Anderson and everything besides my putting was super solid. I haven't play this well in a while."
