DURHAM, N.C. – The Texas Rangers drafted Duke signee
Evan Carter with the 50
th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Carter becomes the second Blue Devil signee to get selected in this year's draft, Jordan Walker, who was taken in the first round by the St. Louis Cardinals.
A four-year letterwinner at Elizabethton High School, Carter is a member of Duke's 12-member recruiting class in 2020. Carter enjoyed an impressive junior campaign at EHS, sporting a 10-2 record on the mound along with a 1.34 ERA, while notching six complete games. He closed out the 2019 season being named the All-Conference Pitcher of the Year, while also being selected as the Super 22 Player of the Year and receiving First Team All-State honors. The talented right-hander is a three-time All-Conference honoree.
A two-sport athlete, Carter also competed in football at Elizabethton, lettering his freshman season as a safety and a wide receiver. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and has served as part of the Student Government Association for all four years of his high school career. Carter is also involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and serves as a member of the Mountain Club.
Carter is regarded as a top-500 national prospect according to Perfect Game, being listed as the No. 90 outfielder in the country. Additionally, the organization lists Boucher as the 12
th-ranked prospect in the state of Tennessee and the third-best outfielder in the state.
