DURHAM, N.C. – One year ago, the Duke baseball program captured its second consecutive regional championship, advancing to a Super Regional for the second straight year.
Entering the 2019 NCAA Tournament as one of the last four teams in the field of 64, the Blue Devils were a part of the Morgantown Regional, which was filled with dominant pitching staffs. All four teams within the regional ranked amongst the top 20 in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings and total strikeouts entering the postseason.
Duke defeated Texas A&M, 8-5, in the opening game of the regional before downing host West Virginia, 3-0, in the winners bracket to advance to the finals. In the finals, the Blue Devils defeated the Aggies for a second time, 4-1, notching a perfect 3-0 record to clinch the program's second-ever Super Regional appearance in Nashville.
Game 1 vs. Texas A&M
The Blue Devils used a pair of four-run innings in the opening game of the NCAA Morgantown Regional to take down two-seeded Texas A&M, 8-5. Duke tallied its eight runs in the contest with four-run frames in both the fourth and the eighth to sandwich a Texas A&M run in the fifth. The Aggies rallied for four runs in the ninth, and brought the tying run to the plate, but the Blue Devils would hold on for the 8-5 victory.
Duke received a standout effort from its starter
Ben Gross, who picked up his seventh win of the season. Gross worked 7.0 innings of one-run baseball, scattering four hits and two walks while racking up five strikeouts. The duo of
Thomas Girard and
Matt Dockman worked the final two innings, with Dockman earned his first save of the season as he worked the final two-thirds of the ninth.
Offensively, the Blue Devils were led by three-hit contests from
Erikson Nichols and
Kyle Gallagher, with the two also contributing two runs scored apiece. Nichols and
Rudy Maxwell tied for the team-high in RBI with three apiece, as each recorded a three-run blast.
Game 2 vs. West Virginia
A career-day from
Bryce Jarvis, combined with early offense helped Duke secure a 4-0 victory over top-seeded West Virginia to advance to the regional championship. The Blue Devils scored two runs apiece in the first and third innings to build a 4-0 lead that would hold for the remainder of the contest.
Jarvis spun an eight-inning gem, helping the Blue Devils to their sixth shutout of the inning. The sophomore right-hander notched a then-career high 11 strikeouts across 8.0 innings of work, yielding six hits and only one walk over a career-high 126 pitches. Closer
Thomas Girard worked the final frame, throwing just nine pitches while collecting a pair of strikeouts to secure the win.
Offensively, Duke was led by
Chris Crabtree, who finished with a team-high two hits and one RBI.
Michael Rothenberg also contributed one RBI, while
Matt Mervis added a team-high two runs scored.
Game 3 vs. Texas A&M
The Blue Devils claimed a 4-1 win over Texas A&M in the regional championship to clinch a Super Regional appearance for the second consecutive season. Duke concluded the regional with a perfect 3-0 record.
A season-high four RBI from graduate student
Kyle Gallagher powered the Blue Devils over the 19
th-ranked Aggies. Gallagher finished 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, driving home all of Duke's runs in the contest.
The Blue Devils used a combination of three arms in the ballgame, started by left-hander
Bill Chillari. Chillari worked the first 4.2 innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits and one walk while collecting three strikeouts.
Jack Carey picked up the win, covering 2.1 scoreless frames, yielding only one hit and one walk while recording two punchouts.
Matt Dockman earned his second save of the postseason, going the final 2.0 innings, scattering only one hit while striking out one.
Five Blue Devils were named to the NCAA Morgantown Regional All-Tournament team in
Erikson Nichols,
Bryce Jarvis,
Chris Crabtree,
Ben Gross and Gallagher. Jarvis was selected as the regional's Most Valuable Player for his career performance in the game against West Virginia, where he tossed eight shutout innings, and recorded 11 strikeouts.
