DURHAM, N.C. – Jim Freeman joined the Duke volleyball staff in July of 2019 and serves as the director of volleyball operations.
"My favorite thing about Duke is the people I get to work with every day," Freeman said. "I'm honored to work with Coach Nagel and her staff. They're some of the best people I know. The volleyball staff and everyone I've gotten to know in the department have been so professional, kind and helpful in my short time here. It's been a privilege to be able to help them serve our wonderful student-athletes. I routinely say to myself as I walk around campus 'I can't believe I get to work here.'"
Freeman rejoined the Blue Devils after spending five seasons as the varsity head coach at Broughton High School in Raleigh, N.C., where he led the Capitals to three consecutive conference championships.
"After a long high school and club coaching career, I was fortunate enough to join the Duke staff as a volunteer assistant coach in 2010," Freeman said. "After a stint at the college level, two kids and a few more years of coaching high school and club, I was able to rejoin the Duke volleyball staff last July."
Freeman also spent time with the local Triangle Volleyball Club, serving as a member since 2004. With the Triangle Volleyball Club, Freeman coached age five different age groups, including multiple youth National Team participants.
In 2010, Freeman was a volunteer assistant coach on the Blue Devil volleyball staff helping Duke an ACC Championship title. As a volunteer, Freeman assisted with the analysis of the team and opponents, while working primarily with Duke's passers, defensive players and outside hitters.
Prior to Duke, Freeman served as head volleyball coach and assistant director of athletics at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh from 1991-2010. During his 19 years at the helm of the Crusaders, Freeman guided Cardinal Gibbons to 10 state championships and 12 conference titles.
"My favorite volleyball memory has to be the countless of number of incredible people that have come into my life through the sport," Freeman said."
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Freeman graduated Magna Cum Laude from Liberty University with a degree in Physical Education.
