Duke baseball play-by-play announcer Chris Edwards is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable baseball moments throughout his eight years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Edwards' words.
:
One of my favorite things about baseball is the fact you can show up at the ballpark on any given day and witness something you've never seen before or perhaps a piece of history.
Â
That was the case on Friday, February 21, 2020, a day that started with snow and questions of if the game would be played as scheduled or not -- in the end, it became a perfect day for baseball.
Â
As
Bryce Jarvis took the mound for the series-opener against Cornell, you could tell almost from the opening pitch that what Jarvis had on the bump that afternoon was special.Â
Â
The game moved at a rapid pace and, by the later innings, a buzz began to swell around the park and in the broadcast booth. Simply put, a nervous energy was building. Jarvis had retired 24 consecutive batter and went to the ninth inning three outs away from securing the first perfect game in Duke history.Â
Â
After retiring the first two batters in the ninth, the right-hander was just one out away from a perfect night and facing a pinch hitter for the Big Red. Jarvis, who had only been to a three-ball count one time in the contest, nearly lost the perfect bid on a pitch that sailed inside, but on the very next offering, he blistered the outside corner to secure the 31st perfect game in NCAA history.Â
Â
For me, what made the performance from Jarvis so special wasn't just the perfect game, or the fact he struck out a career-high 15 batters or that he completed the game on just 94 pitches. Rather, it was the redemption aspect as just over seven months earlier, in his hometown of  Nashville, Tenn., Jarvis pitched a game that nine times out of 10 would send Duke to the College World Series but he was out-dueled that night by a Kumar Rocker no-hitter to even the Super Regional at one win apiece.Â
Â
But for Jarvis to come back and be on the right side of history a few months later, it shows the baseball gods do have a sense of irony and maybe a little humor.Â
