Duke men's basketball play-by-play announcer David Shumate is giving fans an inside look at some of his memorable hoops moments throughout his three years as the Voice of the Blue Devils. The events highlighted during this series are not meant to be a complete listing of all memorable accomplishments, but a sampling of great moments in Shumate's words.
"When Duke opened the 2017-18 season it faced a daunting challenge – the Blue Devils would play their first nine games of the year in a 20-day span. Five of those were played away from home, including match-ups with then No. 2 Michigan State, Texas, No. 7 Florida, and Indiana – not to mention flights to Chicago, Portland, and Bloomington. Of course Duke won each of those games, maintaining its No. 1 ranking, but what stood out to me the most during that stretch were two incredible comebacks in the PK 80 in Portland.No.
"In the semifinals of the event, Coach K's group trailed by as many as 14 to Texas in the first half and with just 11 minutes to go in the game they were down 16 (64-48). Marvin Bagley III had already established himself as an elite score that season, but he would take over down the stretch – scoring 16 of his 34 in the final 11 minutes of regulation and overtime – helping Duke advance to the title game, 85-78.
"Two days later the Blue Devils found themselves in a very similar position, this time the deficit was 17 to the No. 7 Gators with little more than 10 minutes to play, and the margin was still 10 with 4:35 left. Bagley then sparked a 15-2 run to close the game, complete with a timely three from Grayson Allen and a game clinching steal from Gary Trent, Jr. – capping the fifth-largest second-half comeback in school history, supplanting a record they had set just two days earlier."
