DURHAM, N.C.— Major League Soccer turned 25 years old this year and with the season in hiatus some of the clubs are taking a look back to their inaugural seasons in 1996. Duke men's soccer head coach John Kerr was a part of that season, playing with the then Dallas Burn.
FC Dallas, following the popularity of the Burn Debut match broadcast, is launching a series of #ThrowbackThursday editions of FCD Rewind presented by Heineken, starting with the second match in club history – a 3-0 win over Kansas City Wiz at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas' Fair Park.
Kerr will join former Burn players Jason Kreis and Ted Eck in providing screen commentary on FC Dallas' Facebook page during the match. The game, which originally aired live on ESPN2 on April 18, 1996, can be seen on FCDallas.com/OnDemand from 8-10 p.m. (ET), this Thursday, April
30.
Kreis, also a former Duke standout, played for the Burn from 1996-2004, earning league MVP honors during the 1999 season. He remains Dallas' all-time leader in games played (247), goals (91), assists (65) and points (247). He currently is the U.S. U-23 men's national team coach.
Kerr played in 12 games with 10 starting assignments and had three goals and an assist in that inaugural season.
The 3-0 Burn win marked the first win in franchise history as well as the first goal, thanks to Kreis. Just four days prior, Kerr and Kreis made their MLS debuts in the opener, which the Burn eventually won in a shootout – in MLS rules at the time did not count as a win.
Kerr, coming off the bench late in the game, scored the first shootout goal – which was running towards the goal with the ball from 35 yards out and and beating the keeper who was free to move up off his line, all within five seconds. The article and box score for that first game are below.
